Engagement Ring Types

You have selected the man and are all set to get married. Congratulations! Its time you started the planning. Before anything, you have to select the engagement ring. I for one, would never compromise on this. A great engagement ring means I am off to a good start. There are plenty of engagement rings out there, but I personally will always choose from 4 basic styles – solitaire, halo, vintage, and with side stones or diamond accented.

This guide should help you know more about these styles of engagement rings.

Halo Engagement Rings

I simply adore these engagement rings. A halo enhances the look of the center stone, and adds a sparkle to the ring. Even a smaller center stone will appear larger. You may even opt for a double halo ring, especially if you have a bigger ring size or longer fingers. A wider ring will look better on you. Design-wise too these rings are stunning. You can have smaller or larger stones at the center. It can be gemstones or diamonds. It can be one single color or a mix of several colors.

The halo engagement ring first appeared on the scene in the 1920s, with the popularity of the Art Deco style.

Solitaire Engagement Rings

This is the most classic design, where the focus is always on the center stone. You can go for any shape and size. There are two main differences between solitaire and halo engagement rings. Firstly, in solitaire, traditionally the band doesn’t have any stones, and second, it has a plain setting. However, in some rings, you will find small accent stones on the prongs.

Solitaire engagement rings are also available in many styles. You can have an engraved or a high-polished band. The band can also be twisted, beaded, split shank or knife edged. You can also choose from many prong shapes and styles for the center stone.

Vintage Engagement Rings

These rings can either be true vintage or vintage-inspired that provides heirloom appeal. The stone here can be in any shape. Carvings are intricate. In fact, you can easily identify these engagement rings because of their airy and light looks, and decorative metal work. The geometric designs here are often very unique and bold. Their designs correspond to different eras, such as Edwardian, Victorian, Art Deco, and Art Noveau among others. Airy designs are usually Edwardian, while bold looks are from the Art Deco era.

Go for a vintage engagement ring to show off your unique style.

Side Stone Engagement Rings

Any engagement ring that doesn’t belong to the above three categories is called a side stone or a diamond accented engagement ring. The settings here are traditional. There is a stone at the center without halo, and diamonds on the ring. Once again, the stones can be in any size and shape. In fact, the side stones can either be smaller or larger than the stone at the center. You can have a colored center stone or a diamond and can even mix them both too.
